Taipei is really a food haven. I guess you can find literally anything that you want to eat. From the local foods, american fast food, chinese food, cute and nice cafe, until the french fine dining. There’s even a famous chinese saying ‘Zai Taipei, Ni yi ding hui pang de shang bu liao fei ji’, which means, ‘You will get fat in Taipei until you can sit on an airplane’. haha. *i pray hard for this dont apply to me*
As now, im gonna show you what local foods that i have been eating for this past 2 weeks, and all of these below are recommended! Which means, you really have to try this when you happen to be in town!
1.Niu Rou Juan Bing & Tang Bao (Xiao Long Bao)
Nu Ruo Juang Bing is a scallion pancake with beef filling and spring onion inside it. It’s like eating a thick beef prata. and I love it! haha. Eat this with their chili, and it will bring you to the other level of goodness. It’s price is only (TWD 70 // SGD 3) for a one portion!
And this Tang Bao or what we usually called as Xiao Long Bao is muchh muchh better than Din Tai Fung. and of course this portion of goodness cost much more cheaper too! Well, the skin is much thinner and doesnt really look like how normal Xiao Long Bao should be, but this is freakin good. The pork meat is just so good, so tender, juicy and tasty. and the soup in it can really compliment the meat taste. Price is only (TWD 40 // SGD 1.5)
Located very near to Da An MRT station – once you tapped out, turn to your right, walk straight about 70 meters until you see a junction, and turn to your right. There will be a cluster of noodle shop, drink shop and many other food. You’ll just nee to take a look at this RED signage.
60-76 Xinyi Rd. Sec. 4
2. Deng Long Lu Wei (ShiDa Market)
52 Longquan Street. **CLOSED ON MONDAY**
Located at the heart of ShiDa Night Market (Taipower Building MRT station exit 3). You will find lots and lots of food in this night market. If you happen to be there at dinner time, do try this one. It’s like Singapore’s Yong Tau Foo for me, where you get to choose what to want, and they will cook it for you.
They have vast range of choice. From meatballs, tofu, noodles, pig’s innards, vegetables, fishcakes, pig’s blood cake, seafood, etc2.
How to order?
You need to Queue to choose your meal. Just take a basket, and choose what you want. The different here is, you just need to take a ‘sample’ of the things that you want. Like let say, you want beefballs, you just need to take 1 beefball, and later they will give you 1 portion (3 beefballs) automatically. same goes as lettuce, if you want some lettuce, you can just take 1 of the lettuce leaves. Unless they already tied / package it in one bundle.
After you took what you want, you need to Re-Queue again for them to cook it for you. IF Singapore Yong Tau Fu cooked it with boiling clear soup, they cooked it with boiling ‘tea-like’ soup, and They will asked you spicy or not spicy for your meal.
and Ta-Daa! here how it’s like.. That small pink basket, turned into a huge plate of meals (was sharing this with my brother). It’s not soupy yet not dry, *basah2 gt.. apa sih inggrisnya? hahaha* and it has the ‘tea-like’ fragrance. But the smell is not that strong, so it doesnt really matter. haha. As for me, I love this one a lot. It’s like i can eat this everyday. haha.
The price for this depends on how much food you take. As for me and my brother, we spent (TWD 150 // SGD SGD 6.5) for this portion. But there’s obligatory drink that you have to purchase, which ranges around (TWD 30 / SGD 1).
3. Cong You Bing (Scallion Pancakes)
I tried this Cheese Egg Scallion Pancakes in Yongkang Street (just 2 minutes away from Dong Men MRT station). Once you are on Yongkang Street, you just need to see the longest Queue there. People said this stall has never ran out of customer from the time they opened until closing time.
They have many choices of scallion pancakes. My favorite is still the plain one with eggs. Actually you can easily find this, it’s in every night market, in many local restaurants, and sometimes you can just find one cart in the middle of street selling this green onion pancake. Which again, it tastes like thick prata. This small package can be really filling for your hungry tummy, cause basically it’s all carbs. This snack is a saviour when i woke up late for school. haha. This cost around ( TWD 30-40 // SGD 1 ) per pieces.
4. Xian Su Ji
If we translate it to english, it called ‘salty fried chicken’. But it’s not just selling fried chicken. Like Lu Wei, they are selling many things in one cart. What you need is just choose what you want, take one as a ‘sample’, put it in a basket and give it to the person in charge. If Lu Wei boiled their food, Xian Su Ji fried their food. It’s like Shilin chicken back in Singapore and Indonesia, but with many varieties to choose from.
Be prepared to drink a lot of water, as this is deep fried and a little bit salty (though you can ask to put less seasoning) and garlic-cy *if there’s such a word* haha
Tried this in Shi Da night market too! But too bad, i dont know how to show you the way. im so sorry. =(.. They have a lot of cart selling this ‘Xian Su Ji’. Just pick which ever stall that has the longest Q. haha. same like Singaporean, the people here like to Queue for the good food as well. =).
I guess that’s all for now, i will definitely have Taipei Must Eat Local Food part 2! haha.
Thank God for sending me great friends to introduced this lovely foods in Taipei. Goodnight! =)
